Accelerated Reader

Our PTA purchases the license so that all students can participate in the Accelerated Reader program.

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a program to motivate students to become independent readers while enhancing their comprehension. The children read stories from a specific list of books then take computerized comprehension tests based on the knowledge of the book. Students receive points based on the test, which accumulate for end of the year awards.

Students who accumulate at least 60 points are awarded with a place on the HHE AR Wall of Fame, with recognition during the school's morning announcements.

Students can read as many books as they can at home, but the AR quizzes can only be taken at school on the school computers or tablets.  Please check with your child's teacher about their preferences for how your child can participate in the program.

Parents can search for books that are part of the AR program through this web site: https://www.arbookfind.com/UserType.aspx    Most books in the HHE Media Center are AR books.

Parents can also monitor their child's progress through ARHomeConnect, starting here: https://hosted182.renlearn.com/752690/HomeConnect/Login.aspx

Reading Across Broward

Reading Across Broward is the Superintendent's Reading Motivation Project designed to encourage literacy and motivate Broward students to incorporate reading into their daily lives.

How does READING ACROSS BROWARD work?

The program runs from April 1 through March 31 each year. Any books read during that period can be counted. There are two participation levels. The first is Level One for students in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade Two and readers of picture books and non-fiction books on the students level. The second is Level Two for students in Grades Three-Five and readers of chapter books and non-fiction books on the students level.

To participate in Reading Across Broward, students read the required number of books for each level and record this information on their record sheet. Remember, since the program begins on April 1, any books students read over the summer should be counted.

After you child reads a book, just record the book on the appropriate READING ACROSS BROWARD Reading Record Sheet. The Level 1 sheet is for those children reading picture books; the Level 2 sheet is for readers of intermediate or “chapter books.”

Here are the record sheets:

How many books must I read?

The number of books required for recognition in the program depends on three factors: the level of the books being read, the grade level of the student, and the award level desired.

For Level 1, students work toward a Participation Award (25-49 books), Silver Award (50-74 books), Gold Award (75-99 books), or Superintendent's Honor Roll (100 or more books, including 5 award books).

For Level 2, student work toward a Participation Award (10-25 books), Silver Award (26-34 books), Gold Award (35-49 books), or Superintendent's Honor Roll (50 or more books, including 5 award books).

Students receive recognition, a certificate and a medal at an assembly at the end of each year.   Award medals are purchased by the HHE PTA.

The most important reward for reading is enjoyment and a lifelong habit of reading.
